Your router can tell you many things, mainly using lights that flash different colors.
They even blink or stay on depending on the status of your internet connection.
As a smart home nerd, I wanted to know what they meant, on the new FiOS connection that was just set up at home.
I chose FiOS from Verizon for the same reason everyone did, speed. But you do have to make sure to know of the simpler technical side of fios.
This is what drew me to dive into various resources online to be able to get a clearer picture.
This article is written to make your job easier by consolidating the important points available across the internet along with my personal opinion, ensuring you will get an informed take about the solid or blinking white light on your FiOS router.
The condition status for white light on your Fios Router is ‘Normal.’ Solid white light indicates normal operation, i.e. when your Fios router is turned on, connected to the internet, and functioning normally.
Whereas fast blinking white light means that the router is booting.
What The White Light Actually Means
The white light indicates normal operation. Usually, this situation does not present an issue. White light can be either solid or fast-blink.
Solid white tells us about Wi-Fi and the Internet. It indicates that the router is connected to the equipment at your premises, and Wi-Fi and internet services are active and functioning well. It usually stays for about 30 seconds and then turns off.
Fast-blinking white happens during Hard reset / Reboot and Firmware upgrade.
- For 1-2 seconds before turning solid during Hard reset / Reboot.
- Blinks during upgrade installation and until it is updated.
As long as the router emits a white light, it implies that you have a good Internet connection and that there are no connectivity issues.
The blinking happens usually during a reboot. Therefore if it occurs otherwise, it might be a defective LED or some software issue.
This means that you are connected to the wireless router but do not have an internet connection.
There might be some problem with your router’s connection to your ISP( Internet Service Provider).
Before going for the solutions, you have to make sure that your Fios Router is ON and connected to the internet.
To make sure both ends have proper connections, you can check the WAN cable (fiber optic or coaxial) which connects your Fios Router to the internet.
Now, there are three ways to solve this issue:
- Reset router
- Restart router
- Contact Verizon
Let us look at them in detail.
Reset the router and go through the configuration process again
For resetting the router,
- Manually press the red reset button on the rear end of the router
- Hold for 2-4 seconds and now the router status LED will go OFF
Depending on your connection the FiOS router will return to service after rebooting in about 3 to 5 minutes.
Now check if the router status LED is solid white and try surfing the internet once more.
Note: Your router is reset to the factory default settings when you use the reset button.
Restart the router and wait for the white light to come back on
If the reset button does not do the trick, you can try rebooting/restarting.
- Unplug the router
- Wait for a minute or two
- Plug in back the router
Wait for some time for the initialization process to finish. This might take about 3 to 5 minutes.
Now check the router status LED. If it is solid white, try connecting to the internet again.
Note: Unplugging the power cable and plugging it back is termed power cycling of the Router.
Contact Verizon
If both of the above methods do not provide a solution, then you should contact Verizon. It might be some technical or software issue from their side.
You can either chat, connect using Messenger, schedule a call or directly call them.
You can connect to the Technical support by phone at 800-837-4966. Their services are open 24×7.
To talk to their Customer service, you can call at 888-378-1835, Monday to Friday, between 8 am to 6 pm ET.
The router status LED of FiOS additionally can emit blue, green, yellow, and red. Blue and green depict ‘Normal’ condition whereas yellow and red are for ‘Issues.’
- Blue, when solid, indicates successful pairing, and depicts pairing mode when it is slow blink.
- Solid green means Wi-Fi is turned off.
- Solid yellow stands for no internet connection.
- Red can either be hardware or system failure (solid), overheating (fast blink), pairing failure (slow blink).
I hope, now you will be able to decipher the solid or blinking white light on your router and its function the next time you see it.
